Introduction

Cluster of differentiation (CD) antigens are cell surface molecules expressed on leukocytes and other cells associated with the immune system. Physiologically, CDs can act in a variety of ways, often acting as important receptors or ligands for cells that can initiate signaling cascades and thus alter cellular behavior, while some CD proteins are not associated with cellular communication but have other functions such as cell adhesion, cell activation, or cell inhibition. For example, CD24 regulates B-cell proliferation and differentiation; CD274 is essential for T-cell proliferation and the production of γ-interferon and IL10, and its interaction with PDCD1 inhibits T-cell proliferation and cytokine production.
